Motorcyclist sent to hospital following Riverside crash

PAUL SQUIRE PHOTO | A police officer at the scene of the crash outside the Suffolk County Center Tuesday morning.

A motorcyclist was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center Tuesday morning after an accident in front of the Suffolk County Center in Riverside.

The man, who works in the county center, was riding a red motorcycle and turning into the center’s parking lot off County Road 51 when he was struck by a black Honda Civic.

The victim was treated for broken bones and bruises by Flanders-Northampton ambulance volunteers at the scene and was airlifted to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, officials said. An ambulance volunteer said all motorcycle accident victims are airlifted as a precaution and said the victim “is going to be okay.”

Southampton police closed off County Road 51 southbound while Riverhead Fire Department crews threw sand on gas that had leaked from the car. It is unclear if the driver of the car was injured  in the crash, or if any summons or tickets were issued.
