Sports Briefs: Local athletes at the college level and Mookie’s coming to town

WOMEN’S GOLF: Santacroce is freshman of year Marie Santacroce of Mattituck was named the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Golf Freshman of the Year, as selected by the conferences coaches, for 2012. Santacroce led Flagler College (Fla.) in scoring average this year and became the first Flagler College female athlete in any sport to be named the PBC Freshman of the Year. Santacroce will continue her golfing career this summer by playing in the sectional qualifiers for the U.S. Women’s Open, U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Public Links Championships.

WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD: Dell’Aira leaps to honor Wheaton College (Mass.) senior Ashley Dell’Aira of Shoreham was recently named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference women’s field athlete of the week. Dell’Aira placed first in the triple jump (38 feet 11 3/4 inches) and second in the long jump (17-5 1/2) at the Brown Invitational.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Ascher takes loss Steve Ascher, a freshman from Mattituck, was a tough-luck loser for Oneonta State in a 2-0 loss to Keystone College on April 15. Ascher entered the game at the beginning of the sixth inning and threw the final four innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out two batters.

MEN’S LACROSSE: Stern scores four goals Daniel Stern, a sophomore from Shoreham, scored two of his team-high four goals in the first period for Oneonta State in a 14-11 win over Potsdam on April 14. Stern also added a pair of assists.

BASEBALL: Mookie’s coming to Riverhead Former New York Mets player Mookie Wilson will be the honorary guest at the Riverhead Little League’s opening day parade on Saturday. The Long Island Ducks mascot Quacker Jack will make a guest appearance. The parade will begin at 1 p.m.

PAL FOOTBALL: Registration deadline The Riverhead Police Athletic League is accepting registrations for football players and cheerleaders ages 7 through 12 for the 2012 season. To register online, go to www.townofriverheadny.gov and under the Juvenile Aid Bureau, drag the side bar down to Registrations. The registration deadline is tomorrow.
