A Ryder rental truck and four cars were involved in a chain-reaction crash on Route 58 in Riverhead Thursday afternoon.

The truck’s driver, who was heading westbound on Route 58 near Doctors Path about 4:15 p.m., slammed into the back of a Toyota Highlander, which then rear-ended a Chevy Impala, which then rear-ended a Hummer H2, which then rear-ended a Nissan Rogue, Riverhead police said.

Police at the scene said a handful of people — five or six — suffered neck and back injuries, and that none of the injuries were life-threatening. The victims were treated by Riverhead volunteer ambulance workers, with some being taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Riverhead firefighters were called to the scene for what was believed to be a fuel spill but found only anti-freeze in the roadway, officials said.

As of 5 p.m., Route 58 was still closed to traffic between Doctors Path and Northville Turnpike as responders worked to clear the scene.
