Softball: Riverhead eliminated from playoff contention

The Riverhead High School softball team was eliminated from contention for the playoffs after a 12-0 League IV loss at Hauppauge Monday afternoon.

The Blue Waves (9-10, 8-10) never had an opportunity to get up in the seventh inning as the game was called due to the mercy rule with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

“We played lousy,” Riverhead coach Bob Fox said. “That’s all I can tell you. Nowhere near our capabilities.”

Eagles sophomore right-hander Lauren Buturla was brilliant, allowing only two base runners — Alex McKillop’s infield single in the second inning and lead-off hitter Sara Tucci got on via an error in the third.

Senior shortstop Sandy Hawthorne had the first and last words for the hosts, driving in the first and final runs while going 5-for-5 with two doubles and scoring a run.

First baseman and eight-grader Catherine Vaughan went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and stole three bases.

Hauppague (15-3, 14-3) broke open a 3-0 game by scoring six times in the bottom of the fifth.

Riverhead closes out the regular season Tuesday at home against Copiague. If the Blue Waves win, they would finish one win shy of the playoffs for the second straight season.
