Cops: Attempted burglary leads to shooting on Old Farm Road

A man suspected of breaking into a home in Riverhead hamlet was shot by the homeowner, a corrections officer, shortly before 5 a.m. Riverhead Town Police said.

Thomas Anderson, 33, of Riverhead was arrested by police after he was spotted suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder, a short distance from the scene of the burglary, police said.

The homeowner, John Kwasna, 45, said he shot Mr. Anderson after he ran towards him in the hallway of his home, police said. Mr. Kwasna is a 20-year veteran of the Suffolk County Corrections Department.

Mr. Anderson was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center and later transferred to Stony Brook University Medical Center due to the nature of his injuries, police said.
