Two SWR teams vying for county titles today

Mike O'Reilly (left) and Trevor Brosco lead their respective teams toward a county title this afternoon.

It’s Shoreham-Wading River vs. Bayport-Blue Point. Times two.

The Shoreham boys lacrosse and baseball teams will both be playing for county titles this afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. when the lax team faces Bayport at Stony Brook University for the Class C title. The Riverhead-News Review will be providing live updates throughout the game.

The baseball team returns home after last night’s 6-0 win to take on the Phantoms at 4 p.m.

The lax team blew past John Glenn, 14-3, in the semifinals last Wednesday, led by Notre Dame-bound senior Trevor Brosco. Bayport (12-5) had a lopsided win as well, knocking off Mount Sinai, 16-2.

The Phantoms feature six double-digit goal scorers this year, led by junior Brian Ward who’s totaled 55. He also has 27 assists to go with that. Senior Brian White leads the team in points with 44 goals and 53 assists.

White had a big game against Shoreham in the regular season when he scored five goals. But the Wildcats kept the rest of the team in check and won 11-7. The Wildcats led 9-3 after three quarters in that game May 3.

The Wildcats will be playing for a second straight county championship after winning the Class B crown last year. This would be the ninth county title in program history.

The Phantoms are the defending Class C champs. They beat Mount Sinai last year for the program’s first county crown.

The Shoreham-Bayport game tips off a triple-header at Stony Brook that features two other great matchups. Following Shoreham’s game top-seeded West Islip faces No. 3 Ward Melville as two storied programs face off once again for the Class A crown. The nightcap, at 8 p.m., is No. 1 Comsewogue against No. 2 Sayville for the B crown.
