Charlotte B. Wheeler

Charlotte B. Wheeler of Cutchogue, 93, died peacefully June 11, 2012, after a short illness, at her home in Etna, N.H.

Charlotte B. Wheeler

She was born in Riverhead on June 2, 1919, to Ralph C. Brown and Mary Fanning Brown. A graduate of Riverhead High School, she went on to attend William and Mary College and Pratt Institute of Fashion Design.
On Oct. 24, 1941, she was married to Hamilton Adams of Dungannon, Northern Ireland, and New York City. They had two daughters and lived in Manhasset and then Plandome, spending summer weekends in Laurel.

When her husband passed away in 1964, Charlotte moved back to the North Fork and settled in Cutchogue. She was most recently married, to James R. Wheeler of Southold, on Sept. 22, 1989.

Charlotte shared a love of golf with James; both were active members of the North Fork Country Club and continued playing golf well into their eighties. She was also an avid needlepointer and enjoyed her weekly bridge games with friends.

Her husband of 23 years, James Wheeler, survives her, along with her two daughters, Lynn Adams and husband Simon Carr (Lyme, N.H.) and Hilary Adams Pridgen (Etna, N.H.); eight grandchildren: Hamilton Carroll and partner Lourdez Orozco (Leeds, U.K.), Rowan Carroll (Hanover, N.H.), Jerome Carroll and partner Miranda Nunhofer (London, U.K.), Hamilton Pridgen (Washington, D.C.), Meredith Pridgen and husband Nils Erickson (St. John, USVI) and Victoria Pridgen, Jamison Pridgen and Margaret Pridgen (all of Etna, N.H.); and three great-grandchildren, Eleanor and James Carroll and Laura Carroll, who live in England.

Following Charlotte’s wishes, interment will be at Riverhead Cemetery at a private family gathering. Memorial donations may be made to support the local work of The Nature Conservancy.

This is a paid notice.
