Sports Briefs: SWR defenseman helps Long Island to tournament win

GIRLS LACROSSE: Under Armour All-America Shoreham-Wading River defenseman Meredith Bushell helped lead Long Island to the championship of the Under Armour Underclassmen Tournament last weekend at Towson University in Baltimore. Bushell, who’s committed to national champion Northwestern, will be a senior this fall at Shoreham. She helped anchor the Wildcats’ defense last spring in their run to the state championship.

The Long Island team went 3-1 in pool play Saturday of the Under Armour tournament. The girls advanced to play three games Sunday, winning 13-6 against the Midwest, 13-10 against Baltimore in the semifinals and 9-8 over New Jersey in the finals.

Maggie Bill of St. Anthony’s was the tournament MVP.

BASKETBALL: Three on three tourney The Timothy J. Casey Memorial three on three basketball tournament will be played on Saturday, July 14, at the Aldrich Lane courts in Laurel at 11 a.m. In case of rain, the tournament will be played in the Mattituck High School gym. The tournament will have A and B divisions for adults, a college division and a high school division. The cost is $60 per team. All proceeds will benefit the Timothy J. Casey Memorial Fund. BEACH VOLLEYBALL: Tournament in Mattituck The Peconic Bay Medical Center will host its second annual beach volleyball tournament on Sept. 8 at Breakwater Beach in Mattituck. Registration will start at 9 a.m., with play starting at 10 a.m. The cost is $20 per person with six players per team. Individual players are welcome.
