Cops: Speeding Wading River man crashed into telephone pole

A 21-year-old  man flipped his car and crashed it into a telephone pole shortly after police received a telephone call saying he was driving erratically near the Lewin Hills neighborhood of Wading River early Saturday morning, Riverhead Town Police said.

David Osborn Jr. of Wading River was not arrested after police determined excessive speed was the only reason for the accident, police said. The road remained closed for more than 13 hours after the 2 a.m. crash as LIPA workers attempted to fix the damaged pole.

A Riverhead police officer, who had received a report that a car was being driven erratically in the Lewin Hills neighborhood of Wading River, spotted Mr. Osborn driving the car on Hulse Landing Road near North Wading River Road just before the crash, police said.

The officer observed the car leaving the roadway and crashing into the telephone pole, before flipping over onto its roof.

Both Mr. Osborn and his passenger, 17-year-old Eric Witt of Wading River, were treated by Wading River Fire Department Ambulance workers at the scene for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash. They were then transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center.
