Lifelong Riverhead resident Herbert M. Conklin died Aug. 2 at the age of 89.
He was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Riverhead to Laura (Dickerson) and Elmer Conklin. He was an altar boy at Grace Episcopal Church in Riverhead and graduated in 1941 from Riverhead High School.
He married Josephine Mazzaferro on Sept. 27, 1942, in Greenport. Mr. Conklin served in the U.S. Army field artillery battalion during World War II, from 1943 to 1945, attaining the rank of private first class. He receivedseveral Army service medals.
He worked as a dispatcher for the Suffolk County Department of Public Works for 21 years. He enjoyed history, politics, reading and yard work.
Mr. Conklin is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years; his sons, Keith (Arlene) of Orefield, Pa., and Mark, of Riverhead; four grandchildren, Mark and Jamie of Riverhead and Jennifer and Scott of Orefield, Pa. He was predeceased by his mother and father, six brothers and one sister.
Private services were held Aug. 4 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.
