Catharine Jane King-Petrie

Catharine Jane King-Petrie, formerly of East Marion, Shelter Island and Hampton Bays, died Aug. 18 at her home in Highmount, N.Y. She was 54 and had suffered from lung cancer.

She was born March 16, 1958, in Greenport to Helen (Kuzma) and Charles M. King and attended Oysterponds School. Her mother died when she was 11 years old and from age 13 she was raised by her stepmother, Lydia King.

Ms. King-Petrie retired as vice president at Commonwealth Land Title Insurance Company in Riverhead, where she had worked for 30 years.

Taught by her father, she was a superb chess player and excelled at pinochle from an early age, family members said. She was an excellent businesswoman, a good cook and very accomplished at needlepoint, they said.

Predeceased by her husband, David McKinnon Petrie Jr. in 2004, she is survived by her sister Alice B. King of Wading River and her stepson, David M. Petrie III. She was also predeceased by her sister Justine Lewites in 1976, and her brother Eugene King.

Visiting hours will take place Friday, Aug. 24, at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at which time a service will be officiated by Mother Mary Garde of Grace Episcopal Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at East Marion Cemetery.
