SUV slams into tractor trailer in Wading River

PAUL SQUIRE PHOTO | Two people were treated for minor injuries when the SUV they were driving in slammed into a tractor trailer on Route 25.

Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries after a compact SUV crashed into the side of a tractor trailer on Middle Country Road late Wednesday night in Wading River.

The driver of a silver Suzuki Grand Vitara was heading east on Route 25 near Wading River Manor Road about 10:30 p.m. when it slammed into a support strut underneath the trailer of an 18-wheeler, which was backing up in the road at the time, Wading River fire officials said.

Both the male driver and a female passenger were pulled from the car and taken by Wading River ambulance crews to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment.

The two victims were lucky they were not more seriously injured in the crash, said Wading River 1st Assistant Chief Jim Evans, adding that had the SUV missed the support strut, it may have become pinned under the truck.

Riverhead police closed Route 25 between Wading River Manor Road and Tarkhill Trail Wednesday night while the crash was being cleared.
