Police offer reward for woman who stole debit card, went shopping

SUFFOLK COUNTY POLICE | Surveillance footage shows the suspect police say took a woman’s purse and used her debit card to make purchases at various stores in March.

Suffolk County and Riverhead Town police have offered a reward for information on a suspect who allegedly stole a woman’s purse and used the victim’s debit card to go on a shopping spree in March.

On March 12, a woman shopping in the K-Mart on Route 58 reported her pocketbook was missing, police said. Though the purse was later found, $164 in cash and the woman’s debit card were missing, according to a police statement.

On the same day, an unknown woman used the victim’s debit card to buy merchandise at several stores in Riverhead and Hampton Bays, police said.

Police described the suspect as a “heavy-set” white woman with blonde hair. She wore sunglasses and a black sweatshirt, according to surveillance footage. She was last seen driving away in a green minivan, police said.

Police ask that anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspect call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS. A cash reward of up to $5,000 dollars has been offered for information leading to the woman’s arrest. All calls will be kept confidential.
