Joseph M. Smith

Lifelong Flanders resident Joseph M. Smith died Sept. 23 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 49.

He was born Nov. 10, 1962, in Southampton to James and Josephine Smith. He graduated from Shoreham-Wading River High School in 1981 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1982 to 1983.

He coached Flanders Little League, family members said, and enjoyed baseball, softball and motorcycles.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Laura (née Spano); his son, Michael; two brothers, Andrew and Michael; and his mother, Josephine Engelbosch. He was predeceased by his father, his brothers James and Paul and his stepfather, John Engelbosch.

Visiting hours will take place Thursday, Sept. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.
