Update: Riverhead police and the Suffolk County Arson Squad are investigating Wednesday afternoon’s locker room fire and have asked the public for information regarding the arson, according to a police statement.

The gym locker fire was intentionally set, police said, adding that the locker and the contents inside suffered “minor damage.”

Those with information about the fire are asked to call Riverhead police at 727-4500 ext. 332. All calls will be kept confidential.

Original story: Clothing in a Riverhead High School locker caught fire Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Riverhead Fire Department received an automatic alarm call from the boy’s locker room in the Harrison Avenue school about 4 p.m., said Chief Anthony White.

Responding firefighters found that a single locker had caught fire, Chief White said, adding no one was in the locker room at the time of the fire.

Smoke from the fire was seen coming from the building. The small blaze was contained to the one locker, fire officials said.

No one was injured.

Several engines were called to the school as firefighters put out the fire.

Riverhead police and town fire marshals are investigating its cause.
