2 hospitalized after cars collide on Doctors Path

PAUL SQUIRE PHOTO | Two people were hospitalized after a crash at the intersection of Doctors Path and Northville Turnpike Monday evening.

Two people were injured Monday evening after an SUV crashed into an sedan at the intersection of Doctors Path and Northville Turnpike in Riverhead, town police said.

A black BMW 545i was traveling west on Northville Turnpike about 5:50 p.m. when it was struck by a black Ford Explorer SUV sedan traveling north through the stop sign on Doctors Path, police at the scene said.

The two drivers, a man and a woman, were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center to be treated for non life-threatening injuries, police said. There were no other occupants in the cars.

Police briefly closed both roads as the two vehicles were towed away and the scene was cleared. The roads were reopened by 6:30 p.m.

The crash occurred at the same intersection as a May accident earlier this year that injured three people. Local residents said the corner was dangerous for drivers, saying the town should install a traffic light at the intersection to prevent further accidents and injuries.

“Every time we’re sitting in our house we’re … seeing police and emergency lights,” said one onlooker at the scene.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the BMW was traveling northbound on Doctors Path and ran through a stop sign. The vehicle traveling north was the Ford Explorer.
