A three-foot long American alligator was found in Lake Ronkonkoma Saturday, according to a press release from the Suffolk County SPCA. The discovery marks the seventh alligator found on Long Island this month; five have been found in Suffolk County, including one in Wading River.

SPCA chief Roy Gross said the alligator was found at Lilly Pond County Park, in an area accessible to children. He said the alligator could not survive cold weather.

Lt. Raymond Galoppi of the SPCA donned protective gear and went into the water to rescue the alligator., which appeared healthy and was transported by the SPCA to Second Chance Wildlife Rescue.

In addition to the alligator findings, a boa constrictor, rattlesnake and iguana have all been discovered in Suffolk this month.
