Riverhead area schools cancel Wednesday classes

Classes at all Riverhead area school are cancelled for Wednesday, October 31.

Officials with the Riverhead and Shoreham-Wading River school districts announced Tuesday that the schools would be closed to students Wednesday.

McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead also cancelled classes.

Riverhead district school will remain closed Wednesday due to power outages and damage caused by Sandy, Riverhead district officials said.

Riverhead schools superintendent Nancy Carney said two district schools were still without power Tuesday, and the Aquebogue Elementary School gym lost the top coat of its roof.

Ms. Carney has been told by town officials that though main roads will be cleared Tuesday, side roads and residential areas would be cleared tomorrow, Wednesday.

“Due to downed wires, trees and no power at schools, we are closing on Wednesday,” Ms. Carney said.

Riverhead schools will reopen on Thursday, she said.
