Cops: Armed man arrested after breaking into neighbor’s home

An armed man who attempted to burglarize a Riverhead neighbor’s home Friday afternoon faces a slew of charges after his arrest, according to Riverhead Town Police.

Richard A. Kayte Jr., 31, of Riverhead, was found in possession of marijuana and crack cocaine after police located him following a burglary report at about 3:41 p.m. Friday, police said. A female resident called police and said a man she knew was in her house with a handgun and that he fired several shots while inside the home, police said.

Police located Mr. Kayte in the rear yard of his residence at 568 Raynor Avenue and also recovered the handgun, police said.

Mr. Kayte was charged with first-degree burglary, criminal possession of a weapon (2nd and 3rd degree), first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a controlled substance (7th degree) and criminal possession of marijuana (5th degree).

Mr. Kayte was held for arraignment.
