Bicyclist killed in accident on Flanders Road

A 50-year-old Flanders man riding a bicycle died Friday night after being struck by a car, Southampton Town Police said.

The bicyclist, Robert L. Nelson of Flanders, was treated on scene by the Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance members, then taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A gray 1998 Grand Cherokee was traveling north on Flanders Road when police say Mr. Nelson crossed into the car’s path at the intersection of Flanders Road and Cypress Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. No charges were filed. The investigation is ongoing, police said, and anyone with information is encouraged to call Southampton Police at 631-702-2230 or 631-728-3400.
