Before the start of the 2012 season, Riverhead graduate Miguel Maysonet was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the Big South Conference.
The Stony Brook University running back didn’t disappoint.
Maysonet was announced Tuesday as a unanimous selection for Big South Offensive Player of the Year honors after a dominant season for the Seawolves that has left NFL scouts taking notice.
Maysonet totaled 1,721 yards — tops in the Football Championship Subdivision. He scored 21 touchdowns to join former Stony Brook running back Brock Jackolski as the only players in Big South history with a 20-touchdown season.
A candidate for the Walter Payton Award as the top player in the FCS, Maysonet has posted six 100-yard games and two 200-yard games. On Saturday afternoon Maysonet will lead the No. 13 Seawolves against No. 21 Villanova in the first round of the Division I FCS playoffs. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium. The game will air on ESPN3.
The following day Maysonet’s former high school team will play at Stony Brook against North Babylon for the Division II county title. The Blue Waves’ last title came in Maysonet’s senior season.
