Edward L. Newalis

Former Riverhead resident Edward L. Newalis of Westhampton Beach died Oct. 23 at Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. He was 94.

Mr. Newalis was born Aug. 15, 1918, in Jamesport. He served in the 307th Airborne Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, Company D, during World War II. He parachuted into Holland, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate several death camps in Europe. He was highly decorated, receiving a Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal.

After the war, Mr. Newalis worked at Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center, retiring 35 years ago. He was also an actor, appearing as an extra in several movies, including “Sweet Liberty,” filmed partly in Sag Harbor. He volunteered many hours of service to the veterans and to Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Quiogue (West Hampton Beach). He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 6 at Immaculate Conception Church, followed by burial in the family plot at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Riverhead.
