Update: East Main Street still closed after overnight crash
Update: East Main Street between Prospect Place, across from River Pointe apartments, and Hubbard Avenue remains closed as of 4 p.m.
ORIGINAL STORY:
A section of East Main Street in Riverhead remains closed to traffic Saturday morning while LIPA crews work on a utility pole that was snapped during an overnight car accident.
A car hit the pole about 3:50 a.m. Saturday and overturned. The car’s occupants are believed to have escaped uninjured and then fled the area on foot, Riverhead police said.
The car had South Carolina plates.
A K-9 unit from the Riverhead police searched the area for occupants but did not find the car, officials said.
The road remained closed to traffic between the intersections with Prospect Place, which is just east of Town Hall, and Hubbard Avenue, past 11 a.m. while LIPA crews worked to repair the pole.
Police said there were some power outages as a result of the accident but LIPA is reporting all power has since been restored in this area.
