Richard Luter

Richard Luter of Southold died Jan. 12, 2013, at the age of 86.

He was born in Suwalki, Poland, on Jan. 30, 1926, to Edward and Alexsandra (Liszewska) Luter and was a survivor of the Dachau concentration camp, which was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany.

He came to the United States on Oct. 19, 1944, and served in the United States Army from 1951-53. For 24 years he worked as a marine mechanic at Port of Egypt Marine in Southold. He enjoyed fixing engines, boating, fishing and jigsaw puzzles.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline (née Quarty) Luter; a daughter, Paula Lawson of Mattituck; a granddaughter, Alexandria Lawson of Virginia Beach, Va.; a nephew, Stanislaw Ryszard Jedrusik; a brother-in-law, William Quarty of Lewes, Del.; and 10 nieces and eight nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Jadwiga; a brother, Edward; and six nephews.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery. The funeral procession will leave DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home at 10 a.m. The U.S. Army will render military honors and services will conducted by Deacon Robert Dejewski.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad.
