Gary William Van Hoesen

Gary William Van Hoesen died March 9 at his home in Riverhead after a long battle with cancer. He was 64 years old.

He was born Feb. 17, 1949, in Southampton to Griffith Van Hoesen and Irene Van Hoesen-Henry. He grew up and spent most of his life in Quogue and Westhampton Beach.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Buena Vista College in Iowa and served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1972, attaining the rank of specialist IV. He worked for many years as a bartender and manager at Cliff’s Rendezvous, the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

Mr. Van Hoesen was a member of the Elks, the American Legion and the Goodfellows Club of Suffolk County. He enjoyed reading and visiting with his friends and family, they said.

On Sept. 25, 2012, he married Sheri McCormick in the Florida Keys.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Van Hoesen is survived by his daughters, Christy Salerno of East Quogue and Connie Arrasate of Westhampton Beach; his son, Scott, of Marathon, Fla.; his sisters, Holly McCarthy of Manhasset and Jean, of Quogue; and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his twin brother, Griffith.

A service will be held Wednesday, March 13, from 3 to 7 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.
