Featured Letter: Jamesport honors bravest

Jamesport Fire District held its annual installation and awards ceremony on April 13. Kerri Fetten Davis was recognized for her 20 years of service, Bernard Gevinski was recognized for 50 years of service and James Kane was recognized for 50 years of service along with 30 years as a fire district commissioner.

The department’s Firefighter of the Year award was presented to firefighter Stevie A. Czelatka Jr., as Mr. Czelatka responded to all major incidents in Jamesport. He was also the first to respond to Long Beach and Island Park for 24-hour standby shifts after Hurricane Sandy. Mr. Czelatka was one of the first responding members to the Manorville/Ridge wild fires last year. Back in Jamesport, he was instrumental in probationary firefighter training as well as being the No. 2 Responder of 2012, with 251 points.

The Probationary Firefighter of the Year award was given to Joseph Szot, who earned over 238 points in 2012, all while attending school full time at Hofstra University. Mr. Szot finished fire school last year and is currently an interior firefighter for the district.
