The title said Class C county championship. But the game may as well have been for a state championship.

The two top-ranked teams in the state squared off Tuesday afternoon at Dowling Sports Complex and when it was over, the Mount Sinai Mustangs kept their perfect record intact. The Mustangs led start to finish in a 7-3 win over defending state champion Shoreham-Wading River.

The Wildcats lost their first Class C playoff game since 2006. And it dropped their overall playoff record since that time to 29-3.

The Mustangs won their second county championship in program history and first with Shoreham also in Class C. Mount Sinai lost in the 2011 state finals while Shoreham was in Class B.

Shoreham had been 5-0 in county championship games against Mount Sinai before today.

Caroline Fitzgerald and Kasey Mitchell each scored two goals for the Mustangs. The only Shoreham goals were scored by Jessica Angerman, Shannon Rosati and Paulina Constant.

Mount Sinai advances to the Long Island championship, which will be Saturday or Sunday.
