John M. DiVello of Mattituck died at home June 17 of Parkinson’s disease. He was 80 years old.
He was born in Brooklyn, May 24, 1933, to Vito and Frances (Guieriero) DiVello and attended Grover Cleveland Public High School.
John served in the U.S. Army and then on June 19, 1954, he married the former Francesca Catania. Together they made their home in Mattituck for the past 40 years.
He was the founder of Mattituck Sanitation and a licensed helicopter instructor. In the community he was a longtime member of the Mattituck Fire Department and Mattituck Lions Club. He was also a former commissioner of the Mattituck Fire Department and a former Southold Town Trustee.
Surviving are his wife, Francesca; four children, Vito “Rocky” (Patty) DiVello, John DiVello and Anthony DiVello, all of Mattituck, and Diana DiVello Haase (Bobby) of Mattituck and Orient; a brother, Dominick DiVello of San Diego, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, Jonathan, Tina, Billy, Angela, Christopher (Brenda), Jennifer (T.J.) Hug, Johnny, Andrew, Megan, Nicole, Taylor, Hunter, Joseph, Leah, Anthony and Emily; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Aiden; a cousin, Margie Rosina of Howard Beach; and longtime friend Raymond F. Nine of Mattituck. He was predeceased by a sister, Diana.
The family received friends on June 18 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where prayer services were conducted by Sister Anne Lynch. That evening Mattituck Fire Department and Mattituck Lions Club paid tribute to John. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on June 19 (the 59th wedding anniversary of John and Francesca DiVello) by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church. Interment with U.S. Army honors was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.
Memorial donations in his name may be made to the Mattituck Fire Department, East End Hospice, Mattituck Lions Club or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
