Joseph H. Sawicki Sr.

Joseph H. Sawicki Sr., a lifelong resident of Southold, died July 6, 2013, at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport. He was 84 years old.

He was born Nov. 8, 1928, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport to Leon and Cecelia (Pendzick) Sawicki. He attended Southold High School and then served with the Southold Town Police Department for 30 years, starting as a police officer and rising through the ranks to detective sergeant and chief of department.

In the community, he was a 69-year member of the Southold Fire Department (Eagle Hook & Ladder Company) and an ex-chief and commissioner. He had also been a member of the Southold Town Zoning Board of Appeals.

Mr. Sawicki is survived by his wife, the former Constance (Connie) Raynor, whom he married Sept. 28, 1952, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church; his children: Joseph Sawicki Jr. (Suffolk County comptroller and former NYS assemblyman), William H. Sawicki (lieutenant, Southold Town Police Department), both of Southold, and Lisa Reinking of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Helen Krupski of Cutchogue; and three grandchildren: Joseph Sawicki III, Jamie V. Sawicki and Ashley Sawicki. He was predeceased by siblings Edythe Kujawski and John, Walter and Frank Sawicki.

The family will receive friends Monday, July 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday. July 9,  from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, with Firematic services held  July 8 at 7:30 p.m., followed by Southold Police Department services. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 10, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church, Father Thomas P. Murray officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery.

Memorial donations to Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
