A 23-year-old man carrying drugs on an ATV tried to lose pursuing police by driving off the road in Flanders Sunday morning, but was caught when he turned onto a closed trail, according to police.

Robert Skeeter of Riverhead was riding an ATV on Old Quogue Road around 11 a.m. when he refused to stop for police and drove onto a trail, according to a Southampton Town police report. But police said the trail was closed and Mr. Skeeter was taken into custody. He had marijuana on him, according to the report.

Skeeter was arrested and charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in the third degree, a misdemeanor, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana, having an unregistered and uninsured ATV and other traffic violations.

Mr. Skeeter was taken to police headquarters, where he posted station house bail, according to the report. He is due in Southampton Town Justice Court on Sept. 25, police said.
