Randall J. Atwell of Flanders died Oct. 7, 2013 He was 75 years old.
Randy was born in Brooklyn, the son of Frank and Lucy Atwell. He was employed as a U.S. Postal Service carrier for 40 years in Riverhead.
Randy loved life; he enjoyed rowing the dory, kayaking and canoeing. On the bay he was affectionately called “Mary Poppins,” with his umbrella open to catch the wind. He was also an avid bicycle rider, sometimes in friendly competition with his pastor and his friends for the highest yearly mileage. As motorcycle enthusiasts, Randy and his wife, Patti, shared so many good times and exciting adventures with the many good friends they made as members of the “family” of the Long Island H.O.G. chapter and the Retreads.
A very positive and fun-loving guy, Randy liked nothing more than being with his loving family and dear friends, as he would say, “just enjoying life.” Randy and Patti led a full and rich life sharing with friends and their children. They enjoyed camping, trips to the lava house and the house in the country.
Randy was also a dedicated volunteer at The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown. Serving breakfast and lunch to the students, Randy said it was a “fun and rewarding experience.”
In addition to his loving wife, Patricia, he is survived by his sister, Lynne, and her husband, Walter; his sister-in-law, Theresa, and her husband, Richard; and his brother-in-law, Anthony, and his wife, LaVera. He was the proud and loving uncle of nieces Laurie, Celia, Joanna, Susan, Patricia and Charlene and nephews Gregory, Harrison and Peter.
During Randy’s illness he was deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support he received from family and friends; his support group; his pastor, John Kenrich, and Pastor Kenrich’s wife, Charlotte, as well as the parishioners of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church.
Arrangements were handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A celebration of Randy’s life will be held at a future date.
Memorial donations in Randy’s name may be made to the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, 371 Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown, NY 11787.
