Former Riverhead resident Nils A. Berglund of Swanton, Vt., died suddenly Oct. 22 at his home. He was 62 years old.
He was born Jan. 6, 1951, in Southampton, the son of Leigh and Gertrude (Okestrum) Berglund Sr. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1973 and the University of Connecticut in 1976, earning a master’s degree in agriculture. For many years he was an agent for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.
According to family and friends, Mr. Berglund was a poultry expert, raising and showing his own stock on a national level, and was always willing to answer questions about poultry raising. For a number of years, he had a duck farm in Calverton. He loved raising chickens, ducks, geese, quail, homing pigeons and Devon and Guernsey cattle, they said, but especially loved raising his Corgis.
Mr. Berglund was former chairman of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, past president of the American Milking Devon Cattle Association and a former senior warden at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in St. Albans, Vt.
He is survived by his partner of 17 years, Donald Fournier of Swanton; his brother, Leigh Berglund Jr. of Sag Harbor; and many friends and family members.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. at Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck. Memorial donations may be made to American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, P.O. Box 477, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
