Three people were hospitalized – including one man who was airlifted – following a two-car crash on Route 58 early Wednesday afternoon.

A man and a woman were driving in a sedan about 12:30 p.m. when they were involved in an accident with a Dodge Durango just in front of the new Dick’s Sporting Goods, between Kroemer Avenue and Mill Road, said Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps Chief Joey Oliver.

Riverhead Fire Department members cut apart the sedan to free the driver, who had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with what appeared to be a serious head injury, Chief Oliver said. Firefighters had the helicopter land at Stotzky Park and briefly closed the road while the victim was taken to the hospital.

The woman in the sedan, as well as a teenager who was driving the Durango, were both sent to Peconic Bay Medical Center.
