Southampton cops warn residents about latest phone scam

Phone

Someone has been using Southampton Town police phone exchanges to try to scam residents out of $10,000, authorities said this week.

The police department has received reports of someone with a foreign accent calling residents and identifying himself as “John Anderson.” The scammer tells victims that they have “several warrants” from the Internal Revenue Service for fraud and must wire him $10,000, police said.

The number being used by the scammer is (202) 239-6960, police said. Officials advised residents to not send money or give any personal information to anyone calling.
