Former SWR lax, field hockey player named college coach

Former Shoreham-Wading River lacrosse and field hockey player Brie Claire Drost (left) will coach as an assistant at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. Julianne Bernatzky of Mount Sinai was also hired as a coach.

Brie Claire Drost, a former star field hockey and lacrosse player at Shoreham-Wading River, was hired as an assistant coach at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue to work under her former coach.

Drost, a 2008 Shoreham graduate, will coach on the women’s lacrosse team under Bob Vlahakis, who led the Wildcats to four consecutive state titles from 2007-10. Vlahakis retired as Shoreham’s coach after 2010 and became the coach at St. Joseph’s in 2011.

Drost was a dual-sport athlete at LIU Post, helping lead the lacrosse team to back-to-back Division II national championships the past two years. She played as midfielder and on defense. She also played field hockey in the fall. In 2011 she was named to USACollegeLacrosse.com’s All-America Second Team.

“Brie Claire is an excellent teacher of the game as she is capable of breaking down the defensive footwork clearly, and is already very familiar with the backer defense we play,” Vlahakis said in a statement.
