Shoreham-Wading River senior Dom Pirraglia’s season came to an end Saturday at Times Union Center in Albany. Wrestling against senior John Lauretti of Seaford, Pirraglia fell 9-5 in a wrestleback match, leaving him one win shy of reaching the podium.

Pirraglia went 2-1 on the first day of Division I New York State Championships Friday and needed one win Saturday to guarantee a top-six finish and all-state honors. But he fell behind 5-0 in his 182-pound match against Lauretti and couldn’t overcome the early deficit.

Pirraglia rallied in the third period, securing two takedowns to get within a point at 6-5. But Lauretti earned an escape and just before the buzzer took down Pirraglia for two more points. If he had won, Pirraglia would have wrestled twice more, in the consolation semifinals and finals.

He finishes his career with 117 wins and posted a 46-5 record this year.

Pirraglia will continue his wrestling career next year at Wesleyan University.
