Riverhead grads lead Suffolk into regional finals

Two Riverhead High School graduates helped lead the Suffolk Community College women’s basketball team to a 17-7 record this season, capped by a trip to the Region XV Championship Game Sunday. 

Freshman Naysha Trent and sophomore Marta Czaplak both played key roles throughout the season, including in a 56-42 win over Rockland Community College Saturday in a regional semifinal game.

Suffolk played Sullivan Community College Sunday in the regional finals and lost 62-45. The winner of regional tournaments advance into the NJCAA D-III Women’s Basketball National Championship.

In Saturday’s win over Rockland, Trent scored 25 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Czaplak added 10 points with 8 rebounds.

For the season Czaplak averaged 5.8 points per game with 3 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Trent averaged 12.6 points with 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

Trent and Czapak were both a part of Riverhead’s 2012 Long Island championship team, although Trent missed the season due to injury.
