Southampton blotter: Woman tried to hide prescription pills during stop

Southampton Town police say a Riverhead woman was caught trying to hide nearly 30 prescription pills in her purse during a traffic stop in Riverside last Monday morning.

Annette Amato, 48, was seen driving a white Dodge pickup truck without a seat belt on near the Riverside traffic circle at 10:10 a.m., according to a police report. As she was pulled over, a police officer said it appeared she was “attempting to conceal evidence,” according to the report.

The officer searched Ms. Amato’s purse after getting her consent and found 29 methylin 10 m.g. pills inside an aspirin bottle, police said.

She was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor and violation for possession of a controlled substance.

• An unidentified woman grabbed the keys to a 2006 minivan taxi while “hanging out” with a taxi dispatcher in Riverside early last Wednesday and took it for a joyride, Southampton Town police said.

Riverhead Town police later found the vehicle and its keys in Riverhead. The victim told police he did not wish to press charges against the woman.

• Someone swiped an iPhone that was resting atop a baby stroller in the Suffolk County Social Services center in Riverside Friday, according to a police report.

The owner of the blue iPhone 5c told police she put the phone on the stroller about 10 a.m., while trying to find a seat. When she came back, the $200 phone was gone.

The victim said she wanted to document the theft to forward to AT&T, according to the report.

• An iPhone was stolen from a parked minivan in Riverside sometime last weekend, according to a police report.

The victim said he parked and locked his Dodge Caravan on Old Quogue Road in Riverside overnight from last Sunday into last Monday morning, the report states. During the night, someone broke the front passenger window and stole the white iPhone 4s — worth about $200 — from inside.
