While investigating stolen car, cops catch unrelated man on warrant

An officer looking for a suspect in one possible crime ended up making an arrest in a separate incident Friday afternoon in Riverside, according to Southampton Town police.

The officer had been checking the area of County Road 104 in Riverside for two men who fled on foot from a possible stolen car that officers lost track of in a chase. The officer noticed a man walking along County Road 104 who fit the description of one of the men they were seeking, according to police.

That man, Shareem Giles, 43, of Northampton, was not charged in relation to the possible car theft, but was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in Southampton Justice Court on a charge of fifth-degree stolen property stemming from a prior incident. He was arrested and charged with failure to appear in court, police said.

The stolen property charge was not related to the car theft, which was being investigated Friday, and Mr. Giles has not been charged in connection with that case, police said.

The other suspect in the car that fled has not been located, police said.
