Baseball: Hauppauge tops Riverhead in 10th

EAGLES 5, BLUE WAVES 4 (10 INNINGS)

First baseman Devin Jenny’s double off reliever Nick Herzog in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Hauppauge to a 5-4 comeback win over Riverhead in a Suffolk County League IV baseball game on Tuesday afternoon.

The loss made the Blue Waves quest for the playoffs more difficult as they fell to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in the league.

Riverhead left-hander Bobby Dilworth sandwiched four brilliant innings as he allowed two runs in the first and another two in the sixth. At one time he retired 13 out of 14 batters before the Eagles (5-6-1, 2-5) broke through to tie the score.

After the hosts had taken a 2-0 lead, shortstop Jesse Patriss smacked a double to right center field, scoring Kenny Simco and Cody Weiss as the Blue Waves knotted it at 2-2 in the second. They grabbed a 4-2 advantage in the fifth as Cody Smith scored on Ryan Gaffney’s double. Gaffney came around on a pair of errors.

Jenny was a thorn in Riverhead’s side all game as he drove in three runs — on a single in the first, a sacrifice fly in the sixth and the game-winner with a double to right-center field in the 10th.

The Blue Waves will get two more chances at the Eagles, at home Wednesday and back in Hauppauge on Thursday.
