Motorcyclist riding without license allegedly fled cops

A Flanders man tried to ditch his motorcycle and escape on foot after an officer stopped him for not wearing a helmet, according to Southampton Town police.

About 8:22 p.m. on April 23, an officer was called to a report of a speeding motorcycle on Suffolk Avenue in Flanders and saw Esaw Laird, 30, of Flanders, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, according to police.

After he was pulled over, Mr. Laird told the officer he had no license and then dropped the motorcycle to the ground and ran away through the woods on foot, according to police.

Mr. Laird surrendered after a short pursuit, and police found that his license had been suspended five times and that his motorcycle had switched plates.

Mr. Laird was charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor; unlawful possession of marijuana; and a variety of vehicle and traffic law violations.
