Riverhead News: Fire Department holds annual memorial service

The Long Island Sound Chorus, the Riverhead chapter of Sweet Adelines, recently traveled to Albany to compete at the National Convention, where they sang on the steps of the Capitol building with hundreds of other Sweet Adelines. The LISC practices every week in Riverhead and they sing beautifully. 

Kelsey Saladino, daughter of Tom and Kerry Saladino, was one of many children to receive her first Holy Communion May 3 at St. Isidore R.C. Church. A family gathering — attended by Kelsey’s grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends — was held at their home following the ceremony.

Riverhead Fire Department held its annual memorial service, roll call and inspection May 4 at fire headquarters. At the memorial service, the department paid tribute to the following firefighters: ex-captain Harold “Smokey” Schaefer, John Urevich, ex-captain Frank Sendlewski, ex-captain Joe Kaelin, ex-member and captain Bernard Mickaliger and ex-member Tom Jasinski. A fire helmet, jacket, boots and an ax were displayed on a cross among the bouquets of flowers. Memorial candles were also lit and taps were played following a moment of silence and the reading of the names.

The Spiritual Renewal Center at First Parish Church, UCC recently acquired a clothing dropoff bin from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Have you started your spring cleaning? Donations of gently used clothing can be dropped off at the Grange Hall building, 5268 Sound Ave. in Northville (Riverhead).

The Woman’s Club of Riverhead invites you and your guests to its annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon and Fashion Show Thursday, May 15, at 11:30 a.m. at Vineyard Caterers in Aquebogue. The cost is $45. Four $1,000 scholarships will be presented to local high school graduates. There will also be a silent auction, chinese raffle and a 50/50 raffle. The Riverhead-Jamesport Homemakers will hold its annual Achievement Day and Craft Exhibit Friday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the George Young Community Center in Jamesport. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. There will also be raffles of handmade items and theme baskets, and homemade cookies will be sold.
