James R. Cox Sr.

Lifelong Mattituck resident James R. Cox Sr. died May 8, 2014, at the age of 64. 

He was born in Greenport Dec. 17, 1949, to Benjamin H. and Rita E. (Dixon) Cox.

A graduate of Mattituck High School, Jim had been a crew foreman for the Mattituck Park District. Jim had also been a 41-year member of the Mattituck Fire Department and Rescue Squad, for which he served as a lieutenant, captain of Engine Co. 1 and as a chief from 1994 to 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon L. Cox (née Ericson), whom he married Sept. 6, 1975, in Southold; five children: Carolyn J. (Pete) Skoufatos of Chesapeake, Va., Deborah, of Southold, Eileen, of Laurel, James R. Jr., of Mattituck and Benjamin (Stephanie) Oliver of Southold; his sister Joan Platt of Hampton Bays; 10 grandchildren: Peter Skoufatos Jr., Michael Skoufatos, Courtney Kruk, Colin Kruk, Rylie Kruk, Kaitlyn Cox, Alexis Olsen, McKenzie Olsen, Grace Oliver and Bryan Cox; his last surviving aunt: Margaret “Midge” Marcel; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Sandy. He was predeceased by his sister Diane Oliver.

The family received visitors May 12 at Defriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where firematic services were held. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated May 13 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt officiating. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
