Riverhead News: Join the Long Island Sound Chorus

Joanie and George Mottern celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary at a brunch May 19 at Meeting House Creek Inn. They were surprised by their daughters, Jennifer and Sara, family and friends and members from their wedding party — Marie and Jimmy Barnes, Theresa Foley, Penny Czletka and Eddie Reeve. Everyone had a wonderful time. 

The Long Island Sound Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, rehearses Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p.m. at Bishop McGann Mercy High School, 1225 Ostrander Ave., Riverhead. Visitors are always welcome. Come and experience the joy of singing a cappella, four-part harmony and barbershop-style. The chorus will perform at a Flag Day ceremony Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. at the Elks Club, Route 39 in Southampton. For more information, visit longislandsoundchorus.org.

A Summer Nights Dinner Dance to benefit the St. Isidore food pantry will be held Friday, June 6, from 6 to 10 p.m. in the school auditorium. There will be live music by the Below Average White Band and food catered by chef Sean Fountaine of Atlantis. Call 727-2114 to order your tickets ($30 each; two for $50). There will also be a 50/50 raffle, contests and door prizes. Bring your own beverage.

Be sure to wave on those from Pulaski Street Elementary School marching in the 29th annual “Just Say No to Drugs” march Friday, June 6, at 9:30 am. The event is sponsored by Riverhead Community Awareness Program. The nonprofit organization provides drug and alcohol prevention education and counseling programs taught by community volunteers who are assisted by peer leaders from Riverhead High School and Middle School. Lunch will again be provided by the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1742. For more information, call 727-3722.

Suffolk County Historical Society will hold its 70th anniversary of Operation Double Cross Saturday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Camp De Wolfe in Wading River. In collaboration with the Association of Retired FBI Agents, SCHS will commemorate the FBI’s secret World War II spy mission conducted at Benson House, a mission that led to the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. There will be a plaque dedication ceremony at Benson House at 1 p.m.

Riverhead Free Library’s “Prosperity and Abundance” book discussion series continues with “Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential” by Joel Osteen, Friday, June 13, at 7 p.m. at Diliberto Winery in Jamesport. All are invited to attend, whether you’ve read the book or not. For more information, call the library at 727-3228.
