Police investigating after man strips near Flanders school bus stop

An incident involving a man who allegedly began stripping off his clothing near a school bus stop in Flanders Thursday morning is currently under investigation by Southampton police.

Sgt. John Boden said the incident doesn’t appear to be of serious concern.

“[We’re] actively investigating it now, but I don’t think it’s anything to be worried about,” he said.

In a recording sent to Riverhead school parents and staff, assistant superintendent David Wicks said a man ran out of a house on Riverleigh Avenue and started taking off his clothing.

A student was waiting at a nearby bus stop and was unharmed, Mr. Wicks said, adding that “other adults in the area addressed this individual.

“Is is not clear what the intent of the individual was in doing this,” Mr. Wicks said in the recording.

The school notified Southampton Town police and are cooperating with authorities in their investigation, school officials said. An arrest has not yet been made, Sgt. Boden said.
