A small brush fire sparked behind a house on West Main Street where a group of men had started a fire in a barrel, Riverhead Firefighters at the scene said.

The brush fire was located about 75 feet from where the men had lit the fire and officials said the two fires were likely related, though it remained to be determined.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 996 West Main Street about 5:45 p.m. and they left shortly after 6 p.m. as police and a Southampton Town fire marshal, covering for Riverhead Town, remained on the scene to interview witnesses.
