Bertha Harris

Longtime Riverhead resident Bertha Harris, formerly of Southold, died June 22. She was 88. 

Ms. Harris was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Southold to Francis (Dzerzynsky) and John Sledjeski and graduated from Mattituck High School in 1944. She married Stanley Harris April 11, 1948.

Ms. Harris was the publicist and past president for the Polish Town Civic Association.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2006 and is survived by her sister, Irene Garner of Greenport; her brother, Edward Sledjeski of Florida; her son James (Jean) Harris of Riverhead; her son Michael (Jo-Ann) Harris of Patchogue; and her two grandchildren, Jaime Ness of Seven Valleys, Pa. and James Harris Jr. of Riverhead.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, June 26, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.
