A woman was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center after being injured in an accident in Calverton Thursday, Riverhead fire department officials said at the scene.

A woman was driving alone in a white sedan at around 4 p.m. when her vehicle collided with a transit bus on River Road after she exited Kent Animal Shelter, fire chief Joseph Raynor said.

The bus driver attempted to avoid hitting her vehicle but couldn’t, Mr. Raynor said.

No one on the bus was injured, officials said.

The victim was transported to Riley Avenue Elementary School by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance to be airlifted, officials said.

Her injuries weren’t immediately known.

A portion of the road had been closed during the rescue efforts and was reopened as of 5:15 p.m.

She wasn’t the first driver to be airlifted Thursday.

A crash between a tractor trailer and car around 7:20 a.m. shut down several miles of Flanders Road for over five hours this morning, as the drivers of both vehicles were hospitalized.

The driver of the sedan was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital via medvac, and the driver of the tractor trailer to a local hospital via ambulance.
