Photos: Music, art and dance take over downtown Riverhead

It was a picture perfect summer evening Friday as several hundred people filled downtown Riverhead to see JumpstART artists unveil their work on the grounds of the East End Arts complex and various venues along East Main Street and Grangebel Park. 

It was an offering of free public arts: murals, poetry, performances, live music, dance and art installation. Also, the East End Arts 3rd Annual National Show “The Creative Process” held its opening reception at its gallery. The “Best of Show” award went to self-taught artist Don Perley of Old Greenwich Connecticut for his oil on linen painting titled “Juju.”

There were around 500 entries in the show, which was judged by gallery owners Peter Marcelle and Gerald Peters.

More than a dozen artists had taken part in a six-month long professional development series to introduce them to the business and professional aspects of creating and marketing art. While helping artists understand the business side of the profession is an important aspect of JumpstART, East End Arts executive director Pat Snyder said she wants to see these project help the businesses in downtown. Her goal was that the businesses and artists can work together to create a cohesive display.
