Riverhead police said a man was robbed of his cell phone at knifepoint by a trio of men near a Riverhead home Monday night.

Police are still searching for the three men allegedly involved after a K9 team wasn’t able to track them down, according to a police report.

The alleged robbery occurred as the victim was exiting his vehicle on Third Street about 10:10 p.m., police said. The victim told police that he was confronted by three men he didn’t recognize who demanded cash and his cell phone.

One of the men held a knife to the victim’s chest, police said. After stealing the phone, the three men ran off to the west along the railroad tracks, according to the police report.

No injuries were reported by police.

Cops searched the area for the alleged muggers, but could not locate the men, police said.

Earlier this year, town leaders discussed reviving a task force aimed at bringing the community together after a string of violent assaults and robberies in the downtown area this year — most of which have targeted Hispanic men.

The victim in Monday’s mugging was also Hispanic, police said, though it is not known if this robbery is related to the other nearby attacks.

A homeless man had previously pleaded guilty to beating a man during a robbery in January, and is now accused of assaulting a disabled man during a robbery in the same area that took place just over a week after he was released from jail, court records show.

Police have asked with information on Monday’s robbery to call the Riverhead Town police tip line at 631-727-4500 Ext. 633. All calls will be kept confidential.
